You may have read our previous article describing some of the more popular human hair braiding styles. If so, you learned about classic braiding styles like cornrows and microbraids.
But you probably know that those aren't the only styles of hair braiding. Now that you've increased your level of hair braiding experience, here are a few more techniques to consider.
Fishtail Hair Braiding. This is a great method of two-strand hair braiding. Simply divide a section of hair into two equally sized sections, then lay them one across the other as in a normal braid, pulling them together to tighten the plait. The catch is this: Instead of braiding the entire sections into one another, you're pulling off smaller segments of each segments and braiding them across the middle, to form a herringbone pattern. This method of hair braiding creates a lovely "medieval" look that looks great with very long hair.
Dutch Hair Braiding. A Dutch braid is also known as an "underbraid" because it's very similar to a French braid, but cross the left and right sections of hair underneath the middle section instead of over the top of it. The effect is elegant, with a je ne sais quoi that makes passersby do a double take.
Reverse Braids. Similar to Dutch hair braiding, this method goes underneath the middle rather than over the top. The difference is that a reverse braid follows the pattern of a standard three-section braid that falls free of the scalp, whereas a Dutch braid stays close to the scalp in the manner of a French braid.
Braiding Items Into the Hair. For an added twist on the traditional braid, you can include items like ribbons, leather thongs, and strings of beads or pearls into the braid. To do this, simply treat the added material as though it were a strand of the braid. Thus, if you're creating a three-strand braid, use two strands of hair, and the added material as the third strand.
